Abstract

Due to the rapid development of the digital era, the gig economy is becoming a realistic option. This study aims to identify challenges and opportunities related to digital transformation issues in the gig economy for young female freelancers in Pakistan. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected from semi-structured interviews with ten young female freelancers. To analyse the dataset, thematic analysis was employed, focusing on four themes: opportunities, challenges, the impact of socio-cultural norms, and ways to increase female involvement in the gig economy. The findings reveal that digital gig work is perceived as flexible, autonomous, and globally accessible, enabling women to balance their personal and professional lives. Nonetheless, serious barriers still exist such as unstable income, gender basis discrimination, lack of technological skill, and restrictive socio-cultural expectations. Participants identified the need for mentoring, digital training, a government platform, and platform-level reforms to create a safer and more inclusive environment. Notwithstanding,  the gig economy is transformative for young women in Pakistan, underscoring the need for systemic interventions to make digital freelancing a sustainable and equitable career option. The results of this research are relevant to policy, academic, and practice-based discussions about gender, work and digital inclusion.
